Facebook

I have an issue with Facebook.

I guess it's not Facebook, per se.

It's more the people that I have been in contact with recently via the social networking site.

Don't get me wrong. I (like everyone else) think Facebook is awesome. I have been able to connect with a number of old friends that I have not seen since the good old days in Deutschland (also where I met BFF since Papa was affiliated with the overseas military). I have interacted with long lost friends and classmates that I likely would have never seen or heard from were it not for my boy Mark Zuckerberg and his nerdy little homies.

That being said. Now that I am fully immersed in the Facebook culture, spending good chunks of time alternating between stalking old boyfriends (OK, not actual boy friends, more like dudes I liked who would not give me the time of day), and perusing pictures posted by the trampy popular girls who turned out exactly how I hoped they would (pregnant, fat, and strung out looking), I have encountered a strange situation that I like to refer to as a virtual diss.

The thing about the virtual diss is that there is little you can do about it. When you friend someone on Facebook (even if it was only to ensure that she wound up the trampy fat chick you always knew she'd be) and they ignore, or worse, deny your friendship, you have no recourse.

You can contemplate jumping in your SUV and driving to Iowa to find her sitting on her rickety lawn chair in front of her rusty trailer with her half naked, ethnically diverse babies running around in the dust so that you may slap her sunken, tired face, all you want. But, chances of that actually going down are slim.

You could also ask a friend of a friend who knows her friend to give you her number so that you may call her and demand to know her motivation for rejecting your virtual friendship so that if nothing else at least she'll be forced to say it to your face(or your ear). But, that's an unlikely scenario as well.

Instead, what you are most likely to do is obsess over it, talk to your hubby (who could not care less) about it, and log into BFF's Facebook account who she friended (WTF?!) so that you may view all of the trampily posed snapshots of her and her stupid, but strangely normal looking friends, and then log into your blog and tell the world that skinny-ditzy-boyfriend-stealing-hussy-from-high-school needs to GROW UP!

It was like 15 years ago and seriously, he chose you, even if it was only because you were givin' it up. Just friend me already so that I can look at your stupid, skanky pictures and you can look at mine and see how A-W-E-S-O-M-E I am right now.

GREAT and so true!

I don't like to friend people just for fear they would reject me. :)

I told you then and I'll tell you again now, HE JUST LIKED ME BETTER THAN YOU. No need to get all pissy about it now.

And I did see your photographs - you forgot to set your preferences to private.

(Kidding...kidding...I'm not Facebook stalking you. I reserve that for the people I really went to high school with.)

I got my first rejection the other day, and it was oddly painful. Sorta like being in high school all over again. Stupid FB.

Tsquared417 said...

So funny!!! FB is awesome, but it has also caused me some similar grief to this one. It's weird...how you can be right back to your 16 year old head just b/c of FB. Harumph as my daughter says!

ymk said...

yeah, you are mad about someone not accepting your friend request? I am about to write a post about someone actually having the nerves to accept, then knock me off their list. Can you imagine?

Jenny Penny said...

I'm guilty of ignoring requests, for one good reason and one lame one: (1) I'm uncomfortable "friending" people that I have never met in the real world, and (2) there's a FB game called Word Challenge, which has bonus rounds that throw up mixed-up letters of names of people from the user's Friend list, and the more people on the list, the harder it is to figure out the scramble! I'll let you decide which reason is my good one and which is my lame one, because I can't decide.

Jenny Penny said...

P.S. Do you ever have blog followers try to Friend you? I've received my first one, and it's been sitting collecting dust for weeks. I just don't feel comfortable...

tlc said...

Have you ever gotten offended when someone doesn't tag you in a note? Then obsessed over how many comments they're getting? And think about what a clever and witty comment you would have left if YOU would have been taagged? But refuse to comment because you're offended?? yyyeah, me neither.

parentingBYdummies said...

I think I'll send her a friend request daily until she accepts. I'm already being ridiculous about this whole thing, might as well move on to pathetic. Go big or go home, right?!

vanessa13 said...

"Go big or go home, right?!"

I've taught you well my friend, I've taught you well.

Quiskaeya said...

Hilarious! Bawhaaaa you have issues!

I'll have to say that I don't understand friending someone that didn't like me back in the da day. Shoot if I didn't like you then, I probably ain't gonna like you now.

I do think you should send her daily request just for the heck of it. lol

Shelli (wishes she was) Mrs. Burchett;) said...

My own cousin won't friend me! I feel so...so...well...I'm actually ROTFLMAO cause (sing this part) 'I'm prettier than she is! NaNaNaNa Na NaNa!'

Darn tootin' I'm awesome! It is nice to see where everyone is now. And it's kind of nice to brag where I am now too. But I honestly have no idea how I ended up with 249 "friends". Apparently, I know a lot of people... or at least I'm very memorable.

By the way, I would approve you as a friend on facebook. :)

a_healthier_me said...

Wow, I don't think I've had a friend request rejected yet (knock on wood). But I'm careful who I send a request to. There are a couple people I knew of in High School, and I haven't gotten the nerve to actually friend them. :) Yep, I feel 16 again just thinking about it.

Happy SITS day!

mub said...

I'm one of those people who rejects friends *L* I figure I'm far enough away from most people that they won't hunt me down! Plus, we didn't really associate in High School, so what makes me want to associate with them now!

ROFLMAO! I've never been denied, in fact, my beef is with HS friends who friend me then bombard me with those I need "X" for my game, "gifts" and "hugs"....call me mean but I hate those things.

Most of my Facebook friends are people I see/talk to on a daily basis. I've found three friends from HS (which was 30 years ago) and two of them posted their pictures - pictures that make me go "My gawd, you look OLD." Me? I don't look old. Nope.

The third has posted nothing but pictures of the tattoo on her foot. The very LARGE tattoo on her foot.

I think she's in that trailer in Iowa.

Awesome post! I think the only thing worse than this sort of virtual diss is being "friends" with someone one day only to find out weeks later that you've been deleted from their friends list and are no longer, in fact, "friends." It feels like an online breakup with someone you don't even really care about.

Happy SITS day!

Have you ever been jealous on FB because your arch nemisis from HS has four times as many friends as you do?

Um. Me neither.

Queenie Jeannie said...

LOL!!! VERY entertaining!!

I remember when "MySpace" was the thing. Then Twitter. Then Facebook. Soon it will be something else.

And I have refused all of them. I blog and that's enough of a time-suck for me!!

Janna Bee said...

This is so freaking funny and so freaking true!

PS I friend a lot of people at once (what I like to call "the mass friending") and then put it out of my mind so I can't remember who has and who hasn't friended me. I like to think of this as rejection-proofing myself.

Ungirdled Passion said...

So funny, because it's so true. I always say I'm just glad it's not called "stomach book." Happy SITS day. Glad I found you! Love the name of your blog!

I joined facebook just to keep up with my teenagers! They couldn't open an account unless I was a "friend" so that I could stalk them! (jk). Now it's how I keep up with all the moms.

Creative Junkie said...

I just can't get into FB! I have tons of friend requests which are just sitting there since I don't know what to do with them - I mean, I didn't like or know them in high school, why would I want to be "friends" with them now?

Your post had me laughing!

Facebook? Don't have it, don't want it. I have too many other sites to take care of! And I don't need Facebook to get the infamous "diss" because I think the blogsphere is bit like high school all over again :)

Smitten by Britain said...

Hi, congrats on being FB. I love this story, because it is so true. There are people from school who have friended me that I swear, if there name was not there I would not have known who they were. I still feel like I'm 18 but looking at these guys has made me really feel my age. The guys especially are all fat and bald or grey-haired. Most of the girls don't look very good either, especially the popular girls as you say.

I also think it is insincere to friend people who you didn't care about when you were in high school, so I only friend people whom I liked.

Laura Ingalls Gunn said...

It is like high school all over again! The pain, the angst~ the sending out of the relationship scout to inquire why do you like/not like me.

I hate it. So I totally always accept the friendship inquiry. It takes 2 seconds. Even if I am thinking "WHO is this person?" :)

My sentiments exactly... I'm friend requested by people who I don't know/used to loathe me in high school...
Very odd, this post school "we-have-lives-that-matter-now" stage of internet obsession.

Two of my conversations within the last week have been "OMG, I can't believe she's pregnant!" to which my husband replies "You haven't seen her in 8 years, hush!"
Loves the internets!

I don't usually friend people, but wait for them to friend me. One time I did friend someone and it took her about 3 months to finally friend me back. I felt hurt and rejected and so now I just wait for people to find me. That "girl" from my childhood who ruined my life is on facebook, but I would never want to friend her. I searched online and found her family blog just sitting there open to the public. I occasionally go there to see what she is up to and am secretly satisfied to find out that she can't have her own kids and has to adopt. That means that her DNA stops with her (Insert satisfied evil laugh here).

I think she's mad because I wouldn't lend her and her husband money about 10 years ago. I think she's trying to send me a message, but I don't really care. If someone has to carry a grudge for that long, it's their problem, not mine.

Hilarious. I just keep my privacy setting on a very high count. I can friend them, but they can't friend me. Do I have control issues? Nooooo.

Wow...so far, I am one of the last Facebook holdouts in America and I have to say, this post might have delayed my joining even further!

Stopping by via SITS, a little late...

OMG! This is too funny! I'm really late on responding tot his post. I came from SITS and spent a lot of time reading your so funny blog, then my internet service crashed before I could comment. I love your writing. I have never had anyone reject me on FB. Do they actually refuse your friendship or do they just never get back to you? I've had a couple of people not get back to me within a few days and then I take back my friend offer. I'm not being sour grapesy, my OCD self just can't handle this friendship pending thing on my friend list. Those people were just people I wanted to see how they turned out anyway, no one I cared about. My arch enemy from school is actually a guy and he is friends with several of my FB friends, but the last thing I want to do is have anything to do with him. One of the joys of getting old has been putting years between him and me.
